The Agency and the Taiwan Taichung District Prosecutors Office jointly investigated a case involving Director Lai X of the Medical Department and Director Lin Y of the Orthopedics at the Taichung Armed Forces General Hospital, Ministry of National Defense,as well as Director Kuo Z of the Operating Room at the Keelung Branch of Tri-Service General Hospital. The three individuals allegedly took advantage of the procurement of medical equipment and accepted bribes. Lai and Lin used their positions to request specific medical equipment and write specifications, respectively, and then had Company A provide exclusive specifications as the bidding specifications. They received bribes of NT$610,000, NT$340,000, and NT$500,000, respectively. Between 2020 and 2023, Lin also took advantage of the opportunity for patients to use medical supplies to receive bribes of NT$200,000 from Company B and NT$505,000 from Company C.
During the period described above, Lin’s unexplained assets increased by NT$45,310,634, and Kuo’s unexplained assets increased by NT$5,890,320.
After the investigation was concluded, the prosecutor indicted Lai X and others for suspicion of taking bribes by the acts that violate the official duties, taking bribes by an act that belongs to the official duties, unknown origin of property, concealment of proceeds of corruption, general money laundering and other offenses under the Anti-Corruption Act.
